Summer 2024 service trip:
renovation & community support in laos

In June 2024, nine Nordhoff students traveled to Luang Prabang, Laos. After a series of four flights to get there, we were greeted at the airport by the staff of the Green Lion, a local nonprofit who were our hosts for the week. The Green Lion was thrilled to receive our group, as they do not receive enough volunteers for their organization to keep up with the requests and needs of the community they service. They quickly put us to work, with our service in Luang Prabang focusing on the renovation of a local elementary school. LIVE Club cleaned out the classrooms and painted both the interior and exterior of the school over the course of five days. We had some help in the form of a few students from the school who lived nearby and came most days to see the progress we were making! Along with the school renovation, our group also spent one day making bricks from cement, which the Green Lion will be able to use on their upcoming construction projects.

Along with our service work, Nordhoff LIVE spent our week in Luang Prabang learning about the culture and history of Laos. We learned how to craft traditional flower offerings and how to present them at Buddhist temples, while also learning about the history of Buddhism, the daily lives of monks, and the way it shapes Lao culture to this day. We visited several Buddhist temples around Luang Prabang and were able to partake in the morning almsgiving ceremony, in which monks receive offerings of food from the townspeople. We were also able to observe local weavers and paper craftsmen, learning about the traditional forms of art in Laos. Along with these cultural activities, we also observed the natural beauty of Laos by journeying to the Kuang Si Waterfalls, where we hiked and swam. In our downtime in Luang Prabang, we were able to play soccer with a local team, visit several markets, and even spend an evening bowling with our Lao hosts!

After our week of service, we left Luang Prabang to journey into the hillsides and visit some of the nearby villages. We began our next adventure by biking out of Luang Prabang and to the banks of the Nam Khan river. After crossing the river by boat, we continued our journey on foot, trekking through the jungle for several miles before reaching a Khmu village, were we spent the night in a homestay with a local family. The next morning, we continued our journey, trekking to reach another Khmu village, where we would spend the night. After dropping our backpacks off at our new homestay, we continued our hike into the mountains in order to visit a Hmong village, before returning to that night’s village, where we played games with the younger children and soccer with village teenagers. On the third day of our trek, we hiked out of the jungle and back towards the Nam Khan river. Upon reaching the river, we traveled by boat to reach the Mandalao Elephant Center, where we learned about the decline of the elephant population in Southeast Asia and the work that is being done to protect and rehabilitate elephants today, before getting the opportunity to feed some of the elephants and walk with them through the jungle. After saying goodbye to our elephant friends, we kayaked down the Nam Khan river back to Luang Prabang, where we spent one final night with our friends from the Green Lion.

On our journey home from Laos, we were also able to spend one evening in Bangkok, where we traveled by tuk tuk around the city to visit several historical sites and local markets, before continuing our long journey home.

"By exploring Luang Prabang and aiding its communities, I was able to be a part of something I had never thought I could be a part of.  L.I.V.E club has allowed me to expand my horizons and understand the world from an entirely new perspective. Talking with the Lao people made me realize that everyone has more room to learn, and we must approach everything with an open mind. Our conversations usually made me think about the many differences we face, making me feel incredibly grateful for my privileges and an immense admiration for the Lao people and the way they can appreciate their lives regardless of their many difficulties."
